Mrs. Cawley

Hello! I’m Mary Ann Cawley, and I’m delighted to be your child’s 8th Grade Science & STEM Teacher this year. This marks my 22nd year of teaching and my 10th year at Sonoran Foothills School. Originally from the Philippines, I grew up in Oman, where my parents worked as nurses. I completed my elementary and high school education in Oman before moving back to the Philippines to further my studies.

As a child, I aspired to become a pediatrician, which led me to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a focus on Human Biology at De La Salle University. I graduated in 2001 and began medical school, but after a year, I realized that my true calling was in education. I shifted my focus to teaching and completed my master’s degree in Education with a major in Early Childhood Education at the same university in 2003. My teaching career began at a private school in the Philippines, where I taught for five years.

In 2008, I had the opportunity to move to the United States and teach at Somerton Middle School southeast of Yuma. There, I taught 8th Grade Science for seven years and also taught STEM for grades 6 through 8. I served as a Robotics Coach for three years, acted as a Science Lead Adviser, and developed a science curriculum for migrant students. Additionally, I taught a GED Science class during my final year at Somerton. I am committed to continuous learning and have participated in various professional development opportunities, including attending my fourth National Conference on Agriculture in Salt Lake City last summer. I am excited to integrate agricultural literacy into my curriculum and share it with my students.

Some highlights of my teaching career include being named Yuma County Teacher of the Year for the Junior High/Middle School category in 2013 and leading my Robotics team to represent Arizona at the World Festival in St. Louis, MO. I was also a finalist for the 2014 STEM Teacher of the Year award in Arizona, received the Most Valuable Teacher award from the Dbacks Foundation, and won the FLL Coach Award in Arizona in 2018. In the same year, I was honored as the Dbacks Teacher of the Year and received an Honorable Mention for ASTA's 2019 Teacher of the Year for the Middle School category. Additionally, I was named Teacher of the Year by the Deer Valley Education Foundation and earned the Agriculture Literacy Award for Arizona in 2022. Most recently, I was recognized as Teacher of the Month by a local law firm.

Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my husband, who is passionate about motorcycling and gardening. We have been happily married for 10 years. As he often says, he handles the planting while I take care of the cooking! We also have a lovable two-year-old kitten named Starling.

I am thrilled to be part of your child’s educational journey and am committed to helping each student reach their full potential. In my class, they will not only develop an appreciation for science but also become critical thinkers, problem-solvers, and innovative creators. My goal is to inspire your child to excel in science and consider pursuing a STEM-related career.
