I take my responsibilities seriously and strive to serve my students well. Some points to consider if you plan on asking me for a recommendation: Teachers can usually give more thorough evaluations of students they have known for several months, or even a year, or more. Unless I was also your junior teacher, I probably do not know you well. I can only evaluate your performance and character based on a few weeks of classroom experience. Most universities ask me to rate students in a variety of areas. It is difficult for me to rate students new to me, simply because I dont have enough information yet. Are there other teachers that know you better? Academic honesty: Especially with the Ivy League and top schools, I cannot give a rating for items I do not have some knowledge of and may have to check no basis or leave blank. I will be fair. I have written recommendations for students that I do not know well. If asked, I will tell you whether or not I can write you a strong recommendation. If I cannot write a strong recommendation for you, I can still write a professional evaluation. Please remember that recommendations are not the only factor considered in college admissions. Do your homework. Think carefully about where you wish to apply and why. I will send recs for you to a maximum of eight schools. Please waive right to access. Most college application forms, including the Common Application, will ask you to sign a statement and check a box regarding access. I strongly prefer that you waive right to access. What you must do when asking for a recommendation: Request the recommendation(s) in person, or include a cover letter with a formal request. This is not only good etiquette, but also shows respect for the time and effort of the recommender. Provide a current resume and/or a brag sheet NOTE: Some of the directions below apply only to paper applications and may NOT be necessary if using an electronic application. Fill in as much information on the form as possible because universities may ask for information that a teacher does not have. Include: Full name, address, phone, contact information Social security number, if required School code Rank in class (they always ask) First in your family to attend college, if required Any other information that I would not know or would have to look up Be sure to sign and date the Privacy Notice. Universities will not accept without your signature (see Please waive right to access above). Give accurate due dates for each recommendation. Include a list of due date(s) or write due date(s) on the envelope Provide a stamped, addressed enveloped for each recommendation. Please label clearly. Check your postage; always better to put on more stamps than have the recommendation returned. Write return address on all envelopes. Use My name and school address at the top of this letter. If requesting multiple recommendations, please put all materials in one large manila envelope to ensure proper handling. You must provide complete information and materials in advance. Three weeks notice is preferred, but two weeks in advance is acceptable. Recommendations requested after the cutoff date or with insufficient notice may be refused. Be prepared to give a convincing explanation if giving short notice. Fri., 7 December is the cutoff date for requesting admissions recommendations. Flexibility will be allowed for universities with mid January or later due dates.
