DIBELS - Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills
The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are measures for assessing the acquisition of early literacy skills from kindergarten through sixth grade.
In the Deer Valley Unified School District, we administer DIBELS to grades K – 3, three times a year. DIBELS are designed to be short (one-minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills.
DIBELS are comprised of seven measures to function as indicators of phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, accuracy and fluency with connected text, reading comprehension, and vocabulary.
DIBELS were designed for use in identifying children experiencing difficulty in the acquisition of basic early literacy skills to provide support early and prevent the occurrence of later reading difficulties. Every student in grades K -3 is required to take this assessment three times a year.

      Additional Screeners
After the DIBELS assessment, if it is determined that a child may need additional support, then additional screeners will be given. Currently, Deer Valley uses the following research-based screeners to determine a student's needs.
PSI – Phonics Screener for Intervention (This determines what phonics skills students need help with)
PASI – Phonological Awareness Screener for Intervention (This determines what phonological skills students need help with)
SIPPS - Systematic Instruction of Phonics, Phonological Awareness, and Sight Words -This screener will be administered if it is determined that a child needs additional support from an interventionist. It helps determine which specific skill a child may need to begin this intervention program.
