• Mrs. Mathis

My name is Michelle Mathis and I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year!

I am a native of Arizona.  I grew up in the Deer Valley School District, and went on to Arizona State University West.  I graduated Summa Cum Laude with dual certification in both elementary and special education. Most recently, I earned my physical education certificate.

My husband and I have been married twenty-eight years this year.  We have two boys.  Our oldest is 23 and our youngest is  20 years old.

I began teaching at Esperanza Elementary as a special education teacher.  I came to Terramar eighteen years ago as a special education teacher, as well.  I then transferred into 2nd grade the following year.  I taught 2nd grade for nine years and absolutely loved it!  I returned to special education for two years.  I loved being able to focus on differentiating instruction and teaching strategies.  I was also able to push-into my colleagues' classrooms during this time and learned so many new techniques and ideas.  This experience had a huge impact on me and only fueled my desire to return to the general education classroom.  I transitioned to 5th grade math and science for six years.  This was a very fulfilling experience as I loved being able to assist students in their growth and success in these academic areas.   As much as I will miss my 5th grade team and teaching this content to my students, I've decided to learn more about physical education.  I  am fortunate enough to begin my first year in this area.   I feel extremely blessed to be part of the Terramar family.

I love working with kids and strongly believe there is something about every child that just makes them shine.  I am humbled and privileged to be able to discover their unique qualities throughout the year.  I strive to make school a place where our students feel valued, capable and safe.  Emphasis is placed on empathy, compassion, drive, motivation and accomplishment. My goal for every student is for each of them to be able to recognize their abilities and realize that there are no limits to what they can accomplish if they are willing to try and keep trying.  They are truly my inspiration and the reason I love to come to work!

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Michelle Mathis
