Welcome to Sixth Grade,

We are excited about teaching your sixth graders this year. It is important that you monitor your child's

progress via Canvas, Power Schools, Teacher Websites, and talking to your child. In the pages that follow,

we hope to answer all of your questions about sixth grade.

Parent-Teacher Conferences:

Conferences will be held 1st and 3rd quarters.

Standards-Based Grading Practices

Grades will include:

80% Assessments

20% Coursework

Recording Zeros: Our school will not be recording 0's for a missing assignment. Instead, we will record a

49% until the assignment is completed. Assignments that ACTUALLY earned less than 50% are put into

the grade book as a 50% until the assignment has been retaken, if applicable.

Test Corrections: To demonstrate mastery of the standards, test corrections are encouraged and expected on assessments for scores less than 70%, but students may re-take if they score higher than 70% also. Students will keep the higher of the two scores. Students will have to attend small group remediation and complete the work assigned by the teacher. Students must re-take a test within 10 school days of receiving the test score.

Extra Credit: Extra credit and grading on a curve are not used; these practices are not an effective way to

show mastery of standards.

Scale:

A = 90% - 100%

B = 80% - 89%

C = 70% - 79%

D = 60% - 69%

F = 50% - 59%

F = 49% No attempt made, missing work.

PowerSchools: Grades are updated weekly on PowerSchool.

Canvas:. It is important to remember that not all assignments will be entered into PowerSchools. You can see all assignments in Canvas, but check PowerSchools for the actual, current grade. To save paper, we do not send home written progress reports. Also, if you, as a parent, want a password, you may retrieve it from the front office. Lastly, if you would like PowerSchool to automatically send you weekly progress reports, you may sign up directly in your account.

Students will be checking PS each Monday morning, and writing their grades and weeks’ lessons in their Planners. Parents must sign to acknowledge the grades in the Planner each Monday night.

In-Class Procedures: Instruction/Classwork: Please listen carefully to your teacher to ensure your

learning. Do not be a distraction to those around you. If you have a question concerning the topic of

learning, raise your hand to ask the teacher. Please wait for the teacher to dismiss you from class. Do not

pack up your backpack early. Every minute of class time is important!

Rest Rooms: All students will be required to sign out and in for bathroom breaks, nurse, library, other

teachers in e-hallpass.

Classroom Rules - We have "Love and Logic" classrooms:

1. I will treat you with respect, so you will know how to treat me.

2. Feel free to do anything that doesn't cause a problem for anyone else.

3. If you cause a problem, I will ask you to solve it.

4. If you can't solve the problem, or choose not to, I will do something.

5. What I do will depend on the special person, and the special situation.

6. If you feel something is unfair, whisper to me, “I'm not sure that's fair,” and we will talk.

If you choose to break a rule:

1. 1st time: Verbal warning or eye contact

2. 2nd time: Written warning in Behavior card. (Parents must sign the Behavior card after the second

time written in one week.)

3. 3rd time: Three written warnings in one week, will result in a Lunch or After-School Detention.

Quarterly Rewards: students can earn quarterly rewards for having less than 5 offenses on their behavior card and no office referral that results in discipline. Students can also choose rewards for earning 5 or more “Pace tickets” shown on their card. Please check behavior cards daily and sign, if indicated, as this is a form of communication. 

Cell Phones at School: When students are on campus, their cell phones must be powered off and in

backpacks. Once the final bell rings at 3:30, students may turn on their cell phones. If you need to get a

hold of your child, please leave a message with the front office. The front office notifies the teachers when

necessary. If a student breaks this rule after a warning, the phone will be sent to the front office. Students

will have to get their phone back after school. On subsequent offenses, parents must retrieve the phone

from the front office. Students may not wear their headphones or earbuds on campus, unless directed by a

Teacher.

AI Guidance [2024]

In the Deer Valley Unified School District, we are committed to providing our students with the best possible education while ensuring their safety, privacy, and well-being. As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance learning experiences, teachers may incorporate generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the classroom for students. 

Students must adhere to the specific guidelines provided in the assignment details. If no guidance around the use of generative AI is provided, students should follow the “restrictive” level (see chart). Teachers should direct students to contact their teacher before submitting classwork if the student is unsure if the tool or website they are using is permitted on a specific assignment.

To be college-, career-, and community-ready, students in the Deer Valley Unified School District are expected to demonstrate academic integrity. Academic integrity is all about being honest and fair in your schoolwork. It means doing work that is entirely your own and giving credit to others (including generative Artificial Intelligence tools) through proper citation when you use their ideas or words.

If you have questions about the guidelines for academic integrity, you should discuss them with your teacher.

好色导航Academic Dishonesty Statement 

Academic dishonesty refers to any action that compromises the integrity of academic work or evaluation processes. This includes but is not limited to:  

• Copying or stealing another person’s work or data (plagiarism);  

• Allowing another person to copy one’s work;  

• Doing another person’s classwork;  

• Creating more than one copy of one’s work for distribution;  

• Providing another person with the answers on tests or quizzes;   

• Noncompliance with teachers’ test-taking procedures;

• Unauthorized copying or development of software; and

• Unauthorized use of generative Artificial Intelligence.

Consequences for instances of academic dishonesty range from a conference and loss of credit (student will be given another opportunity to show mastery of learning) up to a 5-day suspension and loss of credit.
