Welcome to 2nd grade at Terramar Academy of the Arts.  My name is Mrs. Tibbs and this is my 16th year teaching 2nd grade. I am so excited to be part of the wonderful 2nd grade team at Terramar. I see each student as an individual with the ability to achieve, succeed, and have a positive impact on the world. Second grade is my favorite because of the tremendous growth that takes place during this year. I am proud to be part of the 2nd grade team and am looking forward to an exciting year of learning.

I was raised on the island of Maui, earned my Bachelor's degree from CSUF in California, my Master's degree from ASU and became a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. I have my gifted endorsement and will make sure your child is engaged and challenged in class. As for my family, I have an amazing husband and three beautiful daughters, as well as two playful dogs. We love to travel, and have been to 50 states and 22 countries. I learn something new with every travel adventure and always look for ways to share that knowledge with my students. I enjoy hiking, reading, collecting beach sand, silver charms, dark chocolate, Mexican and Italian food, Amazon, movies, animals, and new adventures!

Nautical themes adorn our classroom as we will focus on our destination ...without losing appreciation for the journey. My classroom will support the needs of the learner and challenge each student to achieve his/her full potential. We implement common core standards, flexible grouping, and differentiation with tiered and small group activities. Students will create interactive notebooks and math journals. Students will participate in creative projects for opportunity to show individuality and make personal connections with the lessons we are working on. Students develop a feeling of pride in producing quality work in my classroom. We utilize the Eureka Math math program, and also Reading Street, which is a comprehensive reading program that also has cross-curricular connections and helps students to develop strong conceptual understandings of text and grammar skills. We will learn the six syllable types, practice computer skills, and participate in hands-on inquiry-based learning in our classroom. Every student will be expected to perform his or her best, act responsibly, and treat others with respect. We are a crew, a team, and we will work together to bring out everyone's personal best.  Everyone can succeed with a positive attitude!  : )
