    Deer Valley High School offers courses as laid out directly from the ºÃÉ«µ¼º½course guide, with a few additions for courses offered only at Deer Valley High School and a few deletions as we do not offer those. The descriptions are more comprehensive as laid out by the Deer Valley High School instructors. Scroll down to find the courses you would wish to enroll.

    To graduate, students are required pass three (3) credits of Lab Science, one of which must be Biology.

    Arizona universities require these courses for admission: three (3) credits of high school lab science one year each from three of the following: Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, or Physics.

     

    BIOLOGY

    Biology is a course designed to teach the structure of living organisms. Biology includes many areas of study and we will be studying Cells, Genetics, Ecology, and Natural Selection to name a few. The course will highlight the various ways these topics affect our lives along with the technology developed to study different aspects of life.

     
    This lab course concentrates on the study of living organisms. Labs assist students to investigate objectives presented in class. This is a required course for graduation. This is a required course for graduation.

    BIOLOGY H

    Biology Honors is a course designed to teach the structure of living organisms. Biology Honors includes many areas of study and we will be studying Cells, Genetics, Ecology, and Natural Selection to name a few. The course will highlight the various ways these topics affect our lives along with the technology developed to study different aspects of life. Since this course is for honors credit, there is a more in-depth knowledge of the concepts.

     
    This lab course concentrates on the study of living organisms. Labs assist students to investigate objectives presented in class and will improve student skills of the knowledge.

    EARTH SCIENCE

    Earth science is a course designed to teach the structure of the Earth and the dynamic forces, which shape our planet. The Earth sciences include many areas of study and we will be studying four main disciplines:  Geology, Oceanography, Meteorology, and Astronomy. The course will highlight the various ways natural forces affect our lives, the technology developed to study the Earth, and the future trends of our impact on this planet.

    This laboratory class introduces students to the foundations of Earth Sciences. Students will study the universe, galaxies, space travel, volcanoes, weather, oceanography, and earthquakes.

    CHEMISTRY

    Chemistry is a course designed to teach the composition of materials, the basic structure of atoms, and how atoms combine to produce molecules. Chemistry also uses symbols and formulas to write chemical equations.

    CHEMISTRY H (Rio Salado – CHM130 and CHM130LL)

    Chemistry Honors is a course designed to teach an advanced level of chemistry class. Chemistry Honors students will study all aspects of the regular chemistry class with extra emphasis on certain topics. Students will study the composition of materials, the basic structure of atoms, and how atoms combine to produce molecules.

    This advanced-level course includes a more detailed study of concepts and a heavier emphasis on mathematics. It concentrates on the theoretical explanation of materials.

    AP PHYSICS I (Rio Salado – PHY101)

    AP Physics I is formerly known as Physics Honors and is a course that leads to our fundamental understanding of how the universe behaves. By focusing our studies on matter, energy, and the interactions of force and motion we can describe anything in the universe around us.

    This course is a lab science that an integration of the conceptual approach and mathematical bases presentation of Newtonian Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Oscillatory Motion, Sound, Electricity, Light, and Energy. The emphasis is on implementation of problem solving skills, lab skills, and understanding of each.

    ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

    Environmental Science is a course designed to teach students of the environment around them, how to protect this environment, and reduce stress on this environment.

    This is an applied lab science based on experimentation and observation. Students solve environmental problems that relate to resource depletion, pollution, and extinction. This science takes a global perspective focusing on both developed and developing countries.

    MARINE BIOLOGY (Rio Salado – BIO145)

    Marine Biology is an advanced science class that will study all aspects of the marine life, how humans affect marine life, and how to protect marine life. Marine Biology is a survey of marine environments and their biotic communities with emphasis on the natural history of marine organisms. This course is for students who wish to pursue a college-level science course. There will be extra emphasis on certain topics during lab activities.

    This is a lab-oriented course for students who have demonstrated achieve in biology and desire to do college-level work. Students in this class will discover the wonders of marine life and their environment. This course is only a Rio Salado class and student must pay course fees to remain enrolled.

    FORENSIC SCIENCE

    Forensic Science is an advanced science class that will study all aspects forensics. Students will study the history of forensic science, crime scene processing, and all aspects of evidence.

    This lab course concentrates on the application of science to civil and criminal laws enforced by law enforcement agencies in a criminal justice system. During labs, students collect and analyze evidence. Some material presented in this class is of a sensitive nature and may be difficult for some individuals. Deer Valley High School advises student discretion.

    ANATOMY/PHYSIOLOGY (Rio Salado – BIO160)

    Anatomy/Physiology is an advanced science class that will study all aspects of the human body, its structures, how those structures work, and how one structure affects another. Laboratory experiments will be included. There will be extra emphasis on certain topics during lab activities. Each semester, students complete one project.

    AP BIOLOGY

    AP Biology is an advanced placement biology class that will study all aspects of the AP Exam as written by the College Board. There will be extra emphasis on certain topics during lab activities. 

    This is a lab-oriented course for students who have demonstrated achievement in biology and chemistry and desire to do college-level work. Enrolled students may take the AP exam.

    AP Chemistry is an advanced placement chemistry class that will study all aspects of the AP Exam as written by the College Board. There will be extra emphasis on certain topics during lab activities. Students will study the composition of materials, the basic structure of atoms, how atoms combine to produce molecules, and how symbols and formulas are used to write chemical equations as well as other areas.

    This course is for students who wish to pursue a college level chemistry course. This course follows the Advanced Placement Chemistry Program. The lab work includes exercises in both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Enrolled students may take the AP exam.
