  • SET is Deer Valley's intervention period, Skyhawk Enrichment Time. During this SET period, our gifted sophomores picked and brilliantly led an activity to our gifted freshman. It is from an activity book designed for gifted high schoolers.

  • First Gifted SET period of the year! We met the gifted specialists, discussed which people in our lives can help us if we are stressed, and came up with positive thoughts to start our day. Someone's spirit animal is Shrek :)

  • From the mouths of babes...words of wisdom or information about AP Human Geography from our first freshman gifted class currently enrolled:

It’s awesome. It helps us prepare us for college.

    Always always always, ask questions.

You have to try harder than middle school classes, but it is worth it.

    You’ll learn life skills.

Helps teach you about the world.

We talk about stuff we wouldn’t normally talk about in other classes.

This class makes you feel smarter than everyone else.

This class give you techniques that will help in other classes.

Good way to close off the day.

You get to learn about worldwide problems.

    Makes you want to travel.

You learn things you don’t learn in history.

You learn about things that are actually interesting.

You’ll learn current issues in politics or just in life.

You’ll solve actual real world problems.

  • Mentor teacher meetings are happening again! Mentor teachers are teachers who like to connect with gifted students. They are another trusted adult on campus for students to build a relationship with for when they need another viewpoint or help with something. They have met a couple times already this year including recently to discuss their options for course selection for the next year.

  • Our first class of gifted Freshman are off to a great start! Many of your students share classes throughout the day, but they are all taking AP Human Geography. If you haven't talked to your kids about their AP Human Geography class, they are having fascinating and high-level discussions. Some quick highlights so far: Students have been engaged in research projects on countries suffering from famine throughout the world. Many of the students now know every nation state in Africa. Last week, students watched a documentary on gendercide in India and China and conducted a university level Socratic discussion on the ramifications of this issue on a global level.

The freshman were also paired up with their teacher mentor and will meet with them in the next week or two, if they haven't met them already. These meetings are meant to give students another adult/advocate on campus. And lastly, the counselor came in and worked with the AP Human Geography class last week and presented with Mr. Bowman. Each freshman was given a binder to keep all of their documentation for their high school years. This can include resumes, service hours, college/scholarships info, and more. We started with a checklist for freshman, an intelligence assessment, and community service documentation. This visit also included a review of email etiquette when emailing adults/coaches/teachers/counselors/employers/etc. Thank you for sharing these thoughtful and engaged young people with us!
