    Tardy Policy & Procedures

What happens when a student is late for a class?

    • With a parent/guardian the student is marked as an excused tardy and sent with a pass to class.

    • If no parent/guardian the student is SWEPT or given an unexcused tardy and sent to the Sweep room (p1) or back to class with a pass (periods 2-7).

    • If a student arrives after the HALFWAY point of any period they are considered absent (excused or unexcused) and counts towards the max of 12 allowed per class/semester.

What is Sweep and why do we use it at MRHS?

Sweep is a proven method used to reduce the number of student tarries, resulting in increased learning time with fewer class disruptions.

    • Period 1 is the largest period we have students late to class so we have a room where all students without a parent or guardian signing them in will go. Located in the Counseling office, students will check in this room, put their phones away and be allowed to work on their iPads. Students can check their teacher's Canvas pages for work missed and can submit assignments electronically or in person the same or next day.

    • Periods 2-7 students will report to the front office and be marked as Swept (or unexcused tardy) but sent back to class with a time-stamped pass (and have 5 minutes total to get to that class). Once a student reaches a total of 10 Sweeps per semester, a conference with the student will occur with an administrator, and the student will receive a copy of the communication, along with communication with parent/guardian.

      • 1st Sweep violation following conference: A lunch detention will be served.

      • 2nd Sweep violation: Two lunch detentions will be assigned.

      • 3rd Sweep violation: Student will be assigned off-school suspension

What if my student is marked absent in one period?

    • If a student believes a teacher made a mistake, we have a 'Blue correction form' in the attendance area of the front office that can be picked up the next day by the student to have a teacher sign to make the correction.

    • If the teacher cannot verify that the student was in class then they are considered to have ditched that class period. Ditching is considered 'elopement' or being in an area that the student should not be in. An

administrator will meet with any student caught eloping when they should be in class and detention and

suspension can be given if this behavior continues.
