8th Grade Exploratories
All 8th grade students with the exception of students enrolled in Band, Choir, and Mandarin will have the opportunity to spend one quarter exploring each of the following four classes:- Quarter 1: Public Speaking
To inform the student of the basics of public speaking: speech study, audience analysis, outlining, documentation, organizational skills, word choice, and presentation. In addition, this course hopes to combat the fears associated with public speaking as well as bring out the speaking attributes of each individual.Over the course of the quarter students will be challenged to create computer generated publications that will allow them to convey messages using technology. It is a great way to introduce them to a variety of programs that will aid them in creating projects throughout their middle and high school years. Many of the programs chosen will require parent consent that will allow the student to create online accounts which will grant the student free access to the program.
- Quarter 2: Careers
In this course, students will use an informative interactive process to explore career and life options that fit their individual interests, needs, and skills. Students begin with a thorough examination of their own interests, aptitudes, achievements, and personality styles. Then, they explore potential for their high school path and then onto their college path. They will ivestvestigate and learn about the in and outs of college. Learning about instate/out of state options, degrees, and financial aspects, such as; scholorships, grants and loans.
- Quarter 3: Family and Consumer Science
In this course, students will use an informative interactive process to explore career and life options that fit their individual interests, needs, and skills. By conducting informational interviews, and plotting training and educational paths. Along the way, students learn to craft effective resumes and letters, and to handle job interview situations.
- Quarter 4: Drama
In this exploratory students develop and refine dramatic skills. Public speaking skills continue to be reinforced. Students address plot, setting and character in both improvised and scripted scenes, and determine specific technical elements to safely provide support to both character and action. Students memorize lines, understand and follow stage directions, and use proper techniques for voice and body control. Students prepare scripted works throughout the year which will be shared with classmates.
