        Hello, my name is Mrs. Burtis, and I am going to be your first grade teacher. This is going to be an exciting year filled with learning and new adventures. This will be my ninth year teaching 1st grade at Highland Lakes, but this will be my 24th year teaching. I have taught special education for twelve years and 1st grade for two years in the Pendergast District. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education and Elementary Education. I also hold a Master’s degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in English as a second language and reading instruction.

       I was born and raised in Glendale, AZ. I have been married for 25 years and have 2 daughters and 1 son. My oldest daughter Jennifer is 22 and is working to save for a house of her own. Samantha is my 18 year old who will be a freshman at Grand Canyon University this year. My youngest, Garrison, will turn 15 this summer. He absolutely loves sports and thinks the whole family should too! I have a French Bulldog named Lola and and English bulldog named Beefy. My house is a very busy place and I enjoy every minute of it.

      I am so excited to be your teacher this year. I am looking forward to an exciting year of learning, exploring and fun in room 504.
