??This Week in Math???

  • This week in math, students will be reviewing and taking the Lesson 5 (subtraction algorithm) Quiz on Thursday.  On Friday we begin reviewing Unit 1 Lessons 1-5.  The following week will be more review and the Unit 1 Assessment which covers all concepts taught thus far.

ºÃÉ«µ¼º½work:  ºÃÉ«µ¼º½work will be assigned most days except for Fridays, Quiz and Test days, and Refine days (the day before test/quiz).  ºÃÉ«µ¼º½work is a worksheet from their student workbooks that they tear out.  We try to give some time in class to work on it, but some days they have to complete most of it at home.  In addition to the paper homework, students are expected to complete a Fluency Flight lesson each day (4 days a week) and pass 2 My Path Lessons by the end of the week on their computers.  Students have at least 30 minutes a day to work on these computer programs unless they are pulled into small group.  Anything not completed by Friday should be finished up over the weekend.

    Standards/Objectives:

    Lesson 5:

    I can...

    • Use place-value strategies to subtract multi-digit whole numbers.
    • Develop fluency with the standard algorithm for subtraction when subtracting whole numbers up to 999,999.
    • Use addition to check differences.
    • Use an estimating strategy with rounded numbers to check for reasonableness of a difference.

    Unit 1 Objective review:

    Lesson 1:

    • 4.NBT.A.1 - Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right.
    • 4.NBT.A.2 - Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.

    Lesson 2:

    • 4.NBT.A.2 - Read and write multi-digit whole numbers and using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.

    Lesson 3:

    • 4.NBT.A.3 - Use Place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place

    Lesson 4:

    • 4.NBT.B.4 - Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

    Lesson 5:

    • 4.NBT.B.4 - Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

    Lesson Vocabulary:

    Lesson 5:

    • algorithm - a set of routine steps used to solve problems.
    • difference - the result of subtraction.
    • estimate (noun) - a close guess made using mathematical thinking.
    • estimate (verb) - to give an approximate number or answer based on mathematical thinking.
    • reasonable  - something that makes sense when given facts are taken into account.
    • regroup - to compose or decompose ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so forth. For example, 10 ones can be regrouped as 1 ten, or 1 hundred can be regrouped as 10 tens.
    • sum - the result of addition.
    • clarify - to make something clear and easier to understand.
    • compare  - to look at two things closely to see what is similar and what is different about them.

    updated Week of 9/16

??This Week in Language Arts?

    3. What are the characteristics of a complex society?
    4. What makes a complex society complex?
    5. How does culture influence the way people live?

?This Week in Science ?

  • This week's inquiry questions:

How could you survive a landslide?

    Standards for Quarter 1:

4.E1U1.5  Use models to explain seismic waves and their effect on the Earth.

4.E1U1.6 Plan and carry out an investigation to explore and explain the interactions between Earth’s major systems and the impact on Earth’s surface materials and processes.

4.E1U1.7 Develop and/or revise a model using various rock types, fossil location, and landforms to show evidence that Earth’s surface has changed over time.

4.E1U2.10 Define problem(s) and design solution(s) to minimize the effects of natural hazards.
