    PE fun with the parachute!

Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year! Your children will have a great opportunity to engage in physical activities and learn lifelong health and wellness skills through physical education this school year. Here are some helpful hints and general guidelines we will use to create the best chance of success for your child in physical education this year.

Safety is our number one priority in PE. Many of the guidelines and responsibilities below are directly related to, and in consideration of, the safety of all students.

    Shoes

All PE shoes should be athletic-type, closed toe with a rubber sole. Shoes should also be secured to the foot through laces or Velcro. “Slip-on” shoes are not recommended as they can easily slip off the foot when performing physical activities such as running, kicking, etc. Please check your child’s PE schedule and send appropriate shoes for these days.

    Weather

In the case of a rainy-day schedule, all classes will be held indoors during the rainy day part of our school day. In the case of “heat advisory” days called by the district office, we will move classes indoors on these days and times as well. Modifications to the activities may take place pending numbers of students and equipment.

We will be outside frequently when it is warm. Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle from home, although we have drinking fountains both outside and inside on campus. We would recommend sunscreen lotion on PE days as well.

    Grades

Physical Education grades will be based on participation and effort towards given objectives, rather than skills or performance. Although a student may not perform a particular skill well, their effort towards achieving that skill will be counted.

    Personal Behavior Management

All students are expected to maintain personal responsibility of their behavior during PE. Consequences from Physical Education can lead to consequences in the classroom as well such as clipping up or down (K-3) or behavior chart marks (4-6).

    Excused Non-Participation

Each student is expected to participate fully each day. If a child is to sit out due to an injury or illness, a parent note or doctors excuse should accompany that child to PE for the day. Extended illnesses or injuries should be accompanied by a doctor’s note for an excused PE day. If a doctor’s note is presented for non-participation, a doctor’s note would be expected for a full return to PE as well.
