    What will my child learn in Kindergarten this year?

    Reading

    • Hold a book right side up and turn pages in the correct direction.

    • Identify letters of the alphabet and their sounds

    • Identify uppercase(capital) letters and lower case letter

    • Demonstrate one-to-one correlation between spoken and printed word

    • Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables and sounds

    • Ask and answer questions about a story

    • Retell a story, including key details about characters and setting

    • Determine meaning of words from how they are used in context

    • Determine whether a story is realistic (nonfiction) or fantasy (fiction)

    • Identify title, author, illustrator, and table of contents in a book

    • Make predictions based on title, cover, illustrations and text

    • Identify and read common sight words correctly

    Writing

    • Use a combination of drawings, dictation, and writing to compose opinion pieces, informative/explanatory text, and/or narrate a single event

    • Add details and strength to writing, with guidance and support

    Speaking and Listening

    • Participate in group conversations with diverse topics

    • Confirm understanding of a story or text read aloud

    • Ask and answer questions to get information or seek help

    • Describe familiar people, places, things and/or events

    • Speak and express thoughts clearly

    • Take turns speaking in class, while listening when not their turn

    Math

    • Know number names and the count sequence.

    • Count to tell the number of objects.

    • Write numbers 0 to 20.

    • Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from.

    • Work with numbers 11–19 to gain foundations for place value.

    • Describe and compare measurable attributes.

    • Classify objects and count the number of objects in categories.

    • Identify and describe shapes (2-D and 3-D).

    • Analyze, compare, create, and compose shapes.

    Science

    • Identify ways technology has changed over time

    • Explores weather and seasons

    • Describe the sun and moon

    • Describe the Earth’s rotation and how it relates to day and night

    • Studies animal life cycles (including researching with guidance and support)

    • Begins learning about the 5 senses

    • Studies energy (e.g., hot, cold, and sound)

    • Identifies selected body parts

    • Identifies man-made objects vs. objects in nature

    Social Studies

    • Identifies traits and behaviors of good citizens

    • Learns classroom, campus and bus safety

    • Identifies important former leaders of the United States
    • Identifies major holidays and festivals.

    • Identifies human adaptations to climate (e.g., clothing, shelter).
